Once you’ve completed our Waiver Form you’re all set for your first visit to The Tide Climbing Centre. Here’s a quick overview of the things you’ll need for your first climbing session with us.
Parking directly outside The Tide Climbing Centre is free of charge. However, spaces are limited and during peak times you may need to use the overflow car park, which is pay and display. The machine accepts cash only, so remember to bring some change with you just in case.
Climbing is a dynamic sport that exercises most muscle groups. The wide range of motion required by bouldering routes can be difficult to achieve in the wrong clothing. We recommend wearing comfortable sportswear for your first visit; clothes you’d typically wear to the gym like leggings, shorts and t shirts.
You might also like to bring along a warm layer, like a sweatshirt or hoodie, to keep you warm while you’re not climbing. The centre can get quite cold if you’re not actively moving, especially in winter.
Climbing shoes are an absolute necessity if you’re coming to use our facilities. Fortunately these can be hired from Reception so you don’t have to bring your own. If you are hiring a pair of climbing shoes, please remember to bring some socks. We have shoes in all child and adult sizes, so we should be able to find the right fit for you.
We also stock Boreal and Ocun shoes and our team are trained in how to fit them properly. So, once you’ve inevitably caught the climbing bug and are looking to purchase your first pair of shoes, be sure to browse the wide range we have to offer in both our in-centre and online shop!
When you visit The Tide Climbing Centre, you may notice everyone carrying around bags of chalk. Chalk is an important tool for climbers, it absorbs the oil and sweat from your palms to improve grip and enable you to climb for longer. Climbing with chalked up hands will help prevent you slipping off holds too.
You can hire liquid chalk from Reception when you pick up your climbing shoes. When using liquid chalk, remember to wait until it’s fully dry before starting your climb. Apply a small amount from the bottle onto your finger tips and then rub it into your hands. You’ll predominantly be using your fingers to grab hand holds, so try and keep the chalk on this part of your hand to minimise waste!
Climbing is a great way to exercise your main muscle groups simultaneously. You’ll likely have worked up a sweat by the end of your session! Having refreshments on hand, like a bottle of water, will help keep you hydrated while you exercise. A water fountain is available to the side of our café should you need to refill during your session. Of course the café itself also serves a wide range of hot and cold beverages, as well as tasty paninis, pizzas and local sweet treats!
We look forward to welcoming you to your first climbing session with us very soon. Don’t forget to tag us on social media so we can see how you get on!
